DEM BOYZ- KO-JO FT BLURR (REVIEW)

I like creativity…
I really do.
I will always say this, I’m not big on Gh music, especially hiplife..
Most of them are so mediocre that it makes my ears bleed.
And the fact that I’m not big on rap music regardless of the country its coming from makes it even worse for me to appreciate the local stuff.
But lately, some artistes are gradually making me eat my words.
Really what is that?
I’m talking about Kojo Cue’s Dem BoyZ.
I like it; I am able to listen to it. I mean I listen to it till it ends…
I even repeat it.
Nope! I’m not saying it’s anything revolutionary but its good.
Semi-tight lyrics over a good production.
The hook by Blurr is not bad at all.
But ‘I be windows, vista’? Like really?
‘Bring you to your knees like you visiting your sister, ista’? Why?
My people get your word game together
Up the ante….
The song is about swag???? Wack rappers and copy and paste boys?
I wouldn’t try to make sense out of it cos I can’t.
But that’s not the point. I mean I listen to Spanish songs and enjoy it so….
The song is good… not international material tho
But A for effort.
The best part of this song is the production. That is what is carrying the song……

I DON’T FEAR YOU- ECXTREME (REVIEW)

So I was asked to do another review.
I’m not a big fan of rap music and unless its really good, I find it very difficult to listen, much more make an objective review. There is a genre of music called Pidgin Music? Ghetto Rap? *shrug*
Well, the song I was sent is one by Ecxtreme (The Lyrical Wanzam?) which features Wanlov the Kubolor. I DON’T FEAR YOU is the title of the song.
Now its not my kinda song so I cant break it down.
But it’s a good listen.
I mean its funny, it makes me laugh.
Wanlov is on it, what more can you expect but humorous lyrics over thumping afro/jama production. The pace and tone the production sets the mood for the listener.
Its draws your attention but its not rude, it is not an up-tempo beat but it wakes you up and makes you no your head. The whole song reminiscent of the era hiplife was birthed.
Its pure, its raw, its unique, it has the I don’t give a F**k feel to it. But then again, that’s the theme of the song.
You be the who who? I don’t fear you you!
This is the kind of stuff that makes it international. Its different from what the people out there are used to. The humor is on point. “Some potholes cannot be dodged”.
I like it, it makes for easy listening.
Now over the top lyrics just simple pidgin…. With Wanlov on it, well what do you expect? Big ups to the lyrical wanzam…. GOOD JOB

MY FIRST JOB AS A MUSIC CRITIC. :D

I’ve always wanted to be a music critic.
I do it everyday but I want to do it officially.
I love how I’m able to take music apart and really bash it or give praises where due. I am very exposed to foreign pop music,
For the local ones, its _________ (flatline).
Ive been accused of not supporting local music and artistes
And been called white trash cos I prefer listening to blonde white girls. My only response to all that is “I don’t listen to trash”.
Well some one who was impressed with my blog asked me to do a write up on a song for him. To me, this invitation was to do a critique and I’m psyched.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the song unlike most local junk is very good so here goes. WISH YOU NEVER MET ME BY BILS RAYOE.
Now I don’t like refixes.
You know how Ghanaian ‘rappers’ jump onto popular hits and make a refix? I hate it!
They always find a way of desecrating the song.
I believe in originality.
Most Ghanaians don’t sample, the just go and rap over the same beat to the point of maintaining the hook. *sigh*. This dude sampled Adele’s Rolling in The Deep.
Ok it’s kinda like a refix but he did it wisely.
I tip my hat at the producer.
He tweaked the original production ( I refuse to call it beat or instrumentals) to make it sound different. He maintained the martial beats and the pounding piano beats. Rayoe’s delivery was on point!
The song is supposed to tell his life story, which is his art. At the first bar, I thought it was Kanye rapping.
That brings me to flaw number 1.
Why are Gh rappers so concerned about the accent?
I don’t get it. He sounds so foreign its not even funny.
I don’t fink the international market is looking for another Kanye West. What they want is something different, new, a breath of fresh air. That’s what these new rappers should aim at. Not copying others Once again, originality!
“Get your lighters up”
“I’m getting paid”
“I’m a hustler”
“I’m going in cos I’m so hard”
“It’s a new era and it’s my time”
Really?
Aren’t we tired of all that?
Can’t they come up with new lines?
The composition tho is amazing!
No hook till the closing 20secs.
What he does is to interpolate some part of his rap with the chanting backing vocals in Rolling In The Deep and then signs off with the chant. the result? AH-MAZING!
I’m not much of a rap fan but I love this song.
It’s pretty cool.
I’m dropping the link here. Y’all should listen and drop your reviews in the comment box. http://mp3twit.com/gFN
